May is the ideal time for planting, which will form the basis of the future harvest. Nikita Chaplin, a State Duma deputy (United Russia faction) and chairman of the Union of Summer Residents of the Moscow region, spoke about which crops are best planted this month.

According to the expert, it is worth planting cold-resistant crops in early May. He clarified: in the first half of the month, when frosts are still possible, it is worth planting greens — dill, parsley, lettuce, spinach and cilantro. These crops germinate quickly and are resistant to cold weather. Radishes, carrots, onions and garlic can also be planted during this period.

"Early vegetables such as radishes and carrots will have time to harvest in June, and onions and garlic are indispensable ingredients for many dishes," Chaplin said.

In the second half of the month, when the risk of cold weather has passed, you can switch to seedlings of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and cucumbers. The expert advises choosing strong seedlings with a developed root system from proven nurseries.

"When choosing seedlings, pay attention to their appearance. It should be strong, healthy, with a well-developed root system. You should not skimp on seedlings, because the future harvest depends on its quality," Chaplin notes.

In addition, May is the optimal time for planting potatoes, beets, squash, pumpkins and squash. These crops are unpretentious and grow well in temperate climates. He explained that potatoes planted in May will yield a harvest by autumn.

Currants, gooseberries and raspberries can also be planted this month. These shrubs take root quickly and will begin to bear fruit next season.

Chaplin recalled that for a good harvest, it is important to take into account the type of soil, illumination and irrigation regime. Regular care, weeding and fertilizing will help the plants to produce a plentiful harvest.

"Don't be lazy to take care of your garden. Water regularly, loosen the soil, remove weeds and feed the plants. Then your garden will surely thank you with a generous harvest," the expert concluded.

Earlier, on April 11, Lemana PRO analysts told Izvestia which planting materials are most popular among Russians. According to the company, monokalium phosphate, carbamide, epin and azofoska are the leaders among fertilizers. Compared to last year, in March 2025, there was an increase in demand for fertilizers for vegetable crops (+17.8%), universal soils (+12.9%) and onions (+12.5%).
