The Russian energy system is more complex, isolated and protected compared to the European energy system, so Russia is not threatened by such global blackouts as in Spain and Portugal. This opinion was shared with Izvestia on April 29 by Vladimir Demidov, an independent expert on the energy market.

"Our electricity generation and supply system is much more complicated than in Europe. We also have different types of energy, but the main ones are nuclear, hydropower and gas. If we are talking about certain natural phenomena, it is impossible to say that they are more susceptible to this influence. Our power grids are used in very harsh conditions — from -50 degrees to +50 degrees," the expert noted.

Demidov called its greater isolation than in Europe another advantage of the Russian system. If, for example, an accident occurs in the area of one of the stations, it will not pull down the entire country's energy system, as happened in Spain and Portugal, the expert noted.

"It was an outside influence, and not natural, but most likely human. There were suggestions that there was a hacker attack in Europe. I am sure that our systems have already been subjected to this many times and have a high degree of protection. Our systems are definitely better protected than European ones," concluded Demidov.

On April 28, a massive power outage occurred in Spain and Portugal, leaving millions of people without electricity. The power outage disrupted key infrastructure on the Iberian Peninsula, affecting public transport, traffic lights, hospitals, manufacturing plants, digital payment systems, and nuclear power facilities. The reasons have not yet been determined.

On the morning of April 29, the operator of the Spanish electric grid, Red Eléctric, announced the almost complete restoration of electricity supply in the country after a large-scale shutdown. According to their data, 99.16% of the total number of power grids has been restored. Later, the Lusa agency announced the restoration of railway transport in Portugal, including transport links between Lisbon and settlements south of the capital on the Setubal Peninsula.
