On the night of May 1, many countries celebrate one of the most mystical holidays of the year — Walpurgisnacht. It is believed that this is the time of rampant evil spirits, when the line between the world of the living and the dead is blurred. Since ancient times, this day was accompanied by magical rituals and fortune-telling, many of which are still popular today. Izvestia tells about how the holiday was celebrated in the old days and what fortune-telling can be done on Walpurgisnacht in 2025.

Where did the name Walpurgisnacht come from?

The celebration has Western European roots and dates back to pre-Christian traditions. Previously, this day was celebrated as a celebration of spring and fertility and was associated with the rampant evil spirits who tried to prevent the arrival of spring. Later, he became associated with the name of Saint Walpurgis, who lived in England in the 8th century. The church day of her veneration falls on May 1. At the same time, the saint herself is considered a defender against black magic.

To this day, there is a legend about another Walpurg (according to other sources, Walburg), a midwife who was executed as a witch during the witch hunts in Europe. Under torture, the woman was forced to confess to blasphemy, participation in sabbaths, and many atrocities committed to the glory of Satan. After that, she was burned at the stake, and her ashes were scattered over the river.

Due to these events, Walpurgisnacht gained notoriety. It is believed that it is on this night that witches flock to the sabbath, where demons, evil spirits and other otherworldly forces also gather to worship Satan— the host of the holiday. Therefore, other names for the celebration are the Night of the Witches or the Witch Bonfire.

To protect themselves from rampant evil spirits, Europeans resorted to a variety of means: they painted crosses on doors, rang church bells and lit large bonfires in which they burned effigies of witches. At the same time, people believed that on this mystical night one could see one's future. Therefore, fortune-telling was an obligatory attribute of the holiday. This tradition is similar to the night before Christmas, which is also considered a special time when you can look into the future.

The most powerful fortune-telling on Walpurgis Night

Mirrors, candles, water, and household items are usually used for fortune-telling. At the same time, there are certain rules that should be followed by fortune-tellers. For example, you can not guess in daylight and on church candles. There should be no extraneous noise sources nearby, and the windows should be tightly curtained. It is necessary to remove all jewelry, including crosses, remove icons and put on loose clothes.

One of the most popular fortune-telling on Walpurgisnacht is the magical ritual "corridor of time". It is necessary to place several mirrors opposite each other and install a candle between them in such a way that it reflects well. After that, a question is mentally indicated, for example: "I want to know the future" or "I want to see my betrothed." Then you need to look carefully into the mirrored corridor, where after a while a picture from the future will appear. At the end of the ceremony, the words "Fuck me!" are pronounced so that otherworldly forces do not break out of the looking glass and can not harm.

Another famous rite is the "star of desires". On a blank piece of paper, you need to draw a large five-pointed star. The name of the fortune—teller is written in the center, and on the rays are the most cherished desires. A burning wax candle is placed on each ray of the star. Then you need to hold your hands over the flame, mentally visualizing the thought. That night, the leaf should be burned on the hill closest to the house, and the ashes scattered in the air. Then the wishes will certainly come true.

To get an answer to this exciting question, you can take three stones: black (jet, shungite or obsidian), yellow (amber, sapphire, tourmaline, golden topaz), silver or blue (moonstone, mother of pearl, pearl, turquoise, aquamarine), or replace them with glass beads that match the color. Then you need to put the stones in the palm of your hand, formulate the question as precisely as possible, to which only an unambiguous answer of "yes" or "no" is possible, and throw it on the table.

The result of divination is judged by the position of the stones relative to each other. Black symbolizes a fortune teller. If there is a yellow one next to it, then the plan will come true. If it's blue or silver, the answer is no. If the stones are located at approximately the same distance, the divination should be continued.

Walpurgisnacht — folk signs and superstitions

In the old days, on the Night of the Witches, it was also customary to notice signals from above that could predict the future. So, it is considered a bad sign to meet a black cat or a stranger at night. In the old days, they believed that evil spirits appeared in their appearance. In order not to attract the attention of evil spirits, the windows were tightly closed in the houses, they did not go outside after midnight and tried not to use abusive words, especially avoiding the word "damn".

However, Walpurgisnacht wasn't just going to cause trouble. For example, there are beliefs that if you wash your face with morning dew at dawn, you can restore beauty and youth. Any plant planted on Walpurgisnacht will bring prosperity and well-being to the house. And children born on this day will have supernatural powers.

It is also believed that prophetic dreams occur on Walpurgis Night, and herbs acquire healing properties. Therefore, the healers went to the forest to collect herbs on the night of April 30th to May 1st.
