The biologist spoke about the timing of the mosquito invasion in Moscow and the surrounding area

In the Central part of Russia, the mass arrival of the first mosquitoes can be expected as early as mid-May. This was announced on Tuesday, April 29, by Vadim Maryinsky, a researcher at the Department of General Ecology and Hydrobiology at the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University.

"If we talk about the central part of European Russia, the mass appearance of mosquitoes has not yet occurred. However, in the southern regions of the country, the larvae hatched from the eggs could have already developed into adult mosquitoes. In the central part, their appearance can be expected sometime in the middle of May," the biologist told Gazeta.Ru».

However, according to the expert, if the cold snap drags on, their departure will shift to the end of May or even the beginning of July.

Earlier, the biologist warned that due to the mild winter, the number of overwintered female mosquitoes and their eggs could be higher. Therefore, an invasion of these insects may be expected in Central Russia this year.

As the expert explained, mosquitoes, by injecting anticoagulants into the skin that prevent blood clotting, can cause small hemorrhages. People with sensitive skin and those who scratch bite sites are particularly susceptible to this. According to her, unlike mosquitoes, horseflies mechanically damage the skin, which leads to rupture of capillaries and accumulation of blood under the skin, forming purple or blue spots. This makes their bites more traumatic, especially for children, who may be less careful in their behavior in nature.
