The fortress of Breslau has fallen

The Red Army continues its offensive: the troops of the 1st Belorussian Front have reached the Elbe River north and southeast of Magdeburg. The cities of Gentin, Zerbst, as well as the large settlements of Schoenhausen, Bergtsov, Parey, Schartau, Gerwisch, Leitznau and others are occupied, Izvestia writes.
There were exactly 2 days left until the Great Victory.
After a long siege, the fortress of Breslau was completely taken under control.
"The garrison of German troops defending the city, led by the commandant of the fortress, General of Infantry von Nigof and his staff, stopped resisting, laid down their arms and surrendered," Izvestia said in a statement.
By the evening of May 7, about 40,000 soldiers and officers had been captured in Breslau.
The material was published as part of the Izvestia special project "80 days to Victory."
