Soviet troops captured an important naval base

On May 5, the troops of the 2nd Belorussian Front captured the town of Svinemünde, a major German port and naval base on the Baltic Sea, the Izvestia newspaper reported in its May 6 issue.
"In commemoration of the victory, the formations and units that most distinguished themselves in the battles for the capture of the port and the Swinemunde naval base should be presented with orders," the publication cites the order of the Supreme Commander.
There were exactly 4 days left until the Great Victory.
In honor of this event, Moscow saluted the soldiers with twelve artillery volleys from one hundred and twenty-four guns.
The material was published as part of the Izvestia special project "80 days to Victory."
