Sarcopenia, that is, an age-related progressive decrease in muscle strength, can be dangerous to health and increases the risk of death. This was announced on Tuesday, April 29, by Olga Tkacheva, Director of the Russian Gerontological Research and Clinical Center of the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, chief freelance specialist in Geriatrics at the Russian Ministry of Health.

"The outcomes of sarcopenia are impaired physical functioning; limited mobility, falls, fractures, hospitalization, difficulties with daily activities, poor quality of life, increased risk of death," Tkacheva told Gazeta.Ru».

According to the doctor, this syndrome is one of the most unfavorable in terms of prognosis, for example, it is associated with a more severe course of chronic non-communicable diseases, a high risk of falls and fractures, and a high incidence of disability.

Earlier, on January 29, Natia Chekhoeva, a gastroenterologist and endoscopist at the Gastro Clinic, told Izvestia that the systematic consumption of excess calories inevitably overloads the body. This not only increases body weight, but also puts a strain on internal organs, including the heart, liver, and pancreas.
