The United States is demanding that the Greek authorities transfer Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, which were previously sent to Saudi Arabia. This was reported by the Kathimerini newspaper on April 28.

"The Americans at two different levels have asked Athens to deploy the currently available Patriot divisions <...> on the territory of Ukraine," the publication says.

It is noted that this decision by the American side is based on the fact that responsibility for armament is now passing into the hands of European countries, as the United States has reduced support for Kiev.

At the same time, according to the newspaper, Greece is currently forming its own multi-level air defense dome and cannot give valuable Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine.

In addition, the United States demanded that Athens involve a Greek frigate in its operation against the Houthis from the rebel Yemeni movement Ansar Allah, writes Kathimerini. It is more difficult to answer Washington's request, since "this is a mission that protects, among other things, the interests of commercial shipping," the newspaper said.

Back in April 2024, Pavlos Marinakis, a representative of the Greek Cabinet of Ministers, said that the authorities were not ready to transfer air defense systems, including Patriot air defense systems, to Ukraine's needs, as the country needed this to ensure its own air security.
