The White House noted Trump's optimism on the issue of settlement in Ukraine

US President Donald Trump remains optimistic about the prospects for resolving the conflict in Ukraine. This was announced on April 28 by White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt.
"Despite the fact that he (Trump. — Ed.) remains optimistic and can make a deal, he is also realistic," she said at a briefing that was broadcast on YouTube.
According to her, the American leader believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky should sit down at the negotiating table and come to a settlement. Leavitt also stressed that Trump supports a permanent cease-fire, not a temporary truce.
Earlier in the day, Putin announced a truce in the days of the 80th anniversary of Victory from zero hours from 7 to 8 May to zero hours from 10 to 11 May. The Kremlin clarified that the Ukrainian side needs to follow the same example.
In turn, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced Kiev's inability to negotiate while Moscow remains open to negotiations. He also called the international recognition of Crimea, Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR, LPR), Kherson and Zaporizhia regions as Russian territories an imperative in resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
