Unknown persons have excavated the grave of former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad in the city of Al-Kardaha in the Syrian province of Latakia. This was reported on April 28 by the Syria TV channel with reference to social networks.

"Unknown persons took the remains from the grave in an unknown direction," the publication says.

It is specified that the people who carried out the exhumation were dressed in military uniforms. Activists who posted the video on social media accuse armed groups of extracting the remains.

Hafez al-Assad served as President of Syria from 1971 to 2000. After his death from a heart attack, power in the country passed to his son Bashar al-Assad. Hafez was buried in Al-Kardaha, which was his hometown, and a mausoleum was built over his grave.

On April 15, the Daily Mail reported that the British police had launched an investigation into the desecration of at least 85 Muslim graves, including children's graves. According to police, dozens of tombstones were destroyed as a result of the vandalism.
