Sugary soda poses the greatest health risk. Such drinks contain artificial colors and flavor enhancers that can cause allergic reactions and have toxic effects on the liver. Irina Volgina, Associate Professor of the Department of Therapy at the State University of Education, told Izvestia about this on April 29.

The doctor explained that the high sugar content is of particular concern, which, with regular consumption, disrupts lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, provoking the development of obesity, diabetes mellitus and diseases of the cardiovascular system.

"The problem is that you can consume more sugar in liquid form than in any confectionery or, for example, fruits. Accordingly, such drinks significantly increase the consumption of fast carbohydrates. And their consumption in situations where we do not control the amount of alcohol consumed (for example, in cinemas) leads to a significant deterioration of the situation," warned Volgina.

The expert noted that carbonated drinks negatively affect the digestive system, causing gastroesophageal reflux disease, chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer. These diseases can lead to serious complications in the future, including oncological pathologies. In patients with pre-existing gastroenterological problems, soda often provokes exacerbations.

As an alternative, Volgina recommends plain water or tea. If we are talking about mineral water, the doctor advises opening the bottle in advance to release gases, which makes the drink safer for your health.

The specialist emphasized that a complete rejection of sugary carbonated drinks is the optimal solution for maintaining health. According to her, regular consumption of such products creates a complex threat to the body, affecting almost all vital systems.

Earlier, on April 6, Sabit Aliyev, a dental surgeon and chief physician of the Russian Dental Implantation Center dental clinic network, told Izvestia which products are dangerous for teeth. He explained that for oral health it is necessary to eat foods rich in phosphorus and calcium, and in order for the gums to remain healthy and not bleed, vitamin C is important, because its deficiency increases the risk of periodontitis. However, Aliev warned that freshly squeezed juices are not always useful. With frequent use, their acidity can exceed even regular soda. It is best to drink such drinks through a straw — then the acid will come into less contact with the teeth.
