80 years of Victory: 35+ most beautiful and heartfelt postcards from May 9th

Every year on May 9, Russia celebrates one of the most important holidays in the modern history of the country — Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War. The 80th anniversary of the Great Victory is celebrated in 2025. This significant date is dedicated to the feat of Soviet soldiers who selflessly fought against the Nazi invaders from June 1941 to May 1945. Every year in Russia, the memory of those who died is honored, bringing victory closer. 80th anniversary of the Great Victory

The Great Patriotic War began on June 22, 1941. At dawn, Nazi Germany launched the first attacks on the USSR, and later that day, Soviet citizens heard a message on the radio about the outbreak of war. Back then, no one could have imagined that the fighting would last 1,418 days and take the lives of over 20 million people.

The capitulation in Germany was signed twice: first on May 7 in Reims (France), where Major General Ivan Susloparov acted on behalf of the USSR, and then, at Stalin's request, on May 8 in Karlshorst, in the presence of Marshal Georgy Zhukov. Due to the time difference in Moscow, May 9th had already arrived at that moment.

The decree recognizing May 9 as Victory Day was signed on May 8, and the day became a holiday and weekend. The first Victory Day Parade took place in Moscow on June 24, 1945. He was received by Marshal Zhukov, and Marshal Rokossovsky commanded the parade. At the climax, Soviet soldiers threw 200 fascist banners at the foot of the mausoleum as a symbol of the complete defeat of Nazism.
