A mercenary from Sweden was sentenced in absentia to 14 years in prison.


The Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) has sentenced Tobias Engqvist, a 28-year-old Swedish citizen, in absentia to 14 years in prison to serve his sentence in a high-security penal colony for mercenary activities and participation in hostilities on the side of Ukraine. This was reported by the DPR prosecutor's office.
"The Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic has pronounced a verdict in absentia in a criminal case against Tobias Engqvist, a 28-year-old citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden. He was found guilty under Part 3 of Article 359 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Participation of a mercenary in an armed conflict")," the agency's website says.
The court found that from May 2022 to February 2025, the militant arrived in Ukraine through Poland. He was trained in the western suburbs of Kiev at a military training ground, from where he was sent to Donbass to participate in combat operations as part of the International Legion armed group. In addition, he was provided with firearms, ammunition, special equipment and food. The mercenary received more than 5.4 million rubles for his participation in the armed conflict.
According to the press service of the department, the court sentenced Engqvist to 14 years in prison to serve his sentence in a high-security penal colony.
Earlier, on April 25, a Belgian citizen was sentenced in absentia to 14 years in prison for mercenary activities on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). He participated in combat operations against Russian military personnel for a monetary reward.
