An outbreak of monkeypox (mpox) has occurred in Sierra Leone, and experts have recorded 177 cases of the virus over the past two days. This was reported on April 27 by The Guardian Nigeria newspaper, citing data from Agence France-Presse (AFP).

"Sierra Leone is facing an increase in the number of reported cases of monkeypox infection: 177 new cases have been reported in recent days," the publication says.

It is specified that the largest number of diseases was recorded in Freetown, the capital of the state. Medical specialists have been sent to the homes of people who may be infected to conduct screening examinations.

According to the publication, 763 cases of mpox have been registered in Sierra Leone since January, 282 of which were fatal.

On January 18, the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan announced that the first case of monkeypox had been detected in the country. They noted that a 22-year-old Azerbaijani citizen went to the hospital with symptoms of the virus. Presumably, during a tourist trip to another country, the young man had contact with infected people.
