Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has arrived in Brazil to attend a meeting of the foreign ministers of the BRICS countries. This was reported on April 27 by a correspondent of Izvestia.

It is specified that the summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro on April 28-29. Brazil has been the Chairman of the BRICS since January 1. In 2024, Russia held this post, and the XVI Summit in Kazan became the key event of its presidency.

As Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova emphasized at a briefing on April 24, the meeting under the Brazilian chairmanship will be an opportunity for a substantive and in-depth discussion of topical issues on the international agenda, as well as crisis and conflict resolution.

On January 6, the Brazilian Government officially announced Indonesia's accession to the association. The republic's membership was approved in accordance with the BRICS enlargement guidelines, criteria, and procedures.

BRICS is an interstate association of countries. On the eve of the summit in Kazan, which took place from October 22 to 24, 2024, 35 applications were received to join the work of the association. Since January 1, 2025, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan have joined it as partners.
