Iran declared national mourning on April 28 in connection with the explosion at the Shahid Rajai seaport in Bandar Abbas. This was announced by the representative of the Iranian government, Fatemeh Mohajerani.
"After the tragic incident at the Shahid Rajai port in Bandar Abbas, the government announced on the 14th (April 28. — Ed.) <...> there is public mourning throughout the country," the Tasnim news agency quotes her as saying.
The government's spokeswoman also expressed her condolences to the families of the victims and informed them that special investigations were being conducted in connection with the incident.
The explosion at the Shahid Rajai seaport occurred on Saturday, April 26. The blast wave was so strong that it severely damaged most of the buildings in the port, as well as cars. 28 people became victims of the incident, 1139 more were injured. The New York Times newspaper later named the cause of the explosion in the Iranian port as a substance for rocket fuel. There is no exact information about the causes of the explosion in Shahid Rajai yet. The Governor of Hormozgan, Mohammad Ashuri, declared three days of general mourning in connection with the tragedy.
On April 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram to Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian and the country's supreme leader Ali Khamenei expressing condolences over the explosion. After that, the Russian Embassy in Tehran reported that Moscow would send several aircraft of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations to help extinguish the fire.
