Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed his condolences to the relatives of those injured and killed when a car hit a crowd of people at a Vancouver festival.

"I was shocked to hear about the terrible events that took place tonight at the Lapu-Lapu Festival in Vancouver. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the dead and injured, the Filipino-Canadian community, and everyone in Vancouver.... We are closely monitoring the situation," he wrote on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

Vancouver police are investigating the details of an SUV hitting a crowd of people at a Filipino community festival, and the case has been transferred to the Department of Especially Serious Crimes.

"At approximately 20:14 on April 26 (06:14 on April 27 Moscow time), a man drove into a large crowd of visitors to the Lapu-Lapu festival in the area of Fraser Street and East 41st Avenue. The 30-year—old suspect was arrested at the scene," the law enforcement officers said in a statement on the social network X.

It became known about a car hitting people at a street festival in Vancouver earlier that day. The incident occurred on the evening of April 26 during the celebration of the Philippine Lapu-Lapu Day. The driver of the car was detained. The Canadian Global News channel, citing sources, reported that at least eight people were killed in the incident, including a child, and six others were injured.
