A new case of cholera has been discovered in Russia, the disease was detected in a resident of the Voronezh Region who returned from India, the regional Department of Rospotrebnadzor reported on April 26.

"The patient arrived on a flight from India to Moscow on April 21. Earlier, a case of cholera was confirmed in a resident of the Moscow region who arrived on the same flight," the department's Telegram channel says.

Rospotrebnadzor staff promptly established a circle of all contact persons with the patient in 33 regions of the country, including passengers who arrived on the same flight. As a result, it was possible to quickly find another patient.

"Currently, the patient is hospitalized in an infectious diseases hospital, he has no signs of illness, he is receiving antibiotics," the department added.

All persons with whom the patient had contact after his return were taken under medical supervision. A laboratory examination has been organized. As of today, none of them have symptoms of the disease. There are no risks of its spread.

On April 24, it was reported that Rospotrebnadzor had identified an imported case of cholera in the Moscow Region. The disease was discovered in a man who returned from India. Peter Chumakov, a biologist and virologist, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), said at the same time that there was practically no risk of cholera spreading in Russia, since its causative agent was very unstable in the external environment. He called the case of cholera detection an emergency, as it is a particularly dangerous infection, while it is not uncommon for India, the scientist added.
