Procrastination is associated with deep psychological causes. So, perfectionism can affect its occurrence, Sergey Martynov, a psychotherapist and founder of the International Institute of Psychosomatic Health, told Izvestia on April 26.

This process involves putting things off and switching attention to minor, unimportant tasks.

"This is a common problem, often caused by perfectionism and low self-esteem. People strive to do everything perfectly and are afraid to start an important business because they are wary of failures and are not sure of their success. As a result, they spend time on less significant tasks and find themselves in a state of constant postponement of important business," the expert noted.

In order to cope with procrastination, the therapist advised starting with the most difficult task, as well as working on your self-esteem.

"Remember your past achievements. You have already coped with difficult tasks, and you have every chance of succeeding again. Analyze how you have become stronger and more experienced over time," Martynov recommended.

You should also focus on the main thing and avoid distractions such as social media and other small things. You need to set priorities and decide that important tasks need attention right now. You should choose the most productive time to work.

According to the expert, sometimes procrastination occurs due to fatigue, overwork, or feelings of powerlessness. At such moments, a person begins to avoid performing important tasks, being distracted by useless things that seem like rest. However, in reality, this can lead to a loss of connection with reality.

"We can spend the whole day doing a lot of little things, browsing social media or playing on our phone, which, by their very nature, do not allow us to relax and unwind. As a result, you may not notice how quickly time flew by, and as a result, you did not rest and did not complete important tasks," Martynov said.

He clarified that when a person tries to do what is needed, but cannot do it, he begins to feel sad, angry at himself, loses confidence in his abilities and feels his inferiority. This leads to a decrease in self-esteem.

"To cope with this situation, it is important to allow yourself to relax and relax without distractions. Try to walk in silence, exercise, or read a good book. It may seem difficult at first, but over time your mood will improve and you will regain your strength. If fatigue and despondency become permanent, it is worth contacting a specialist to diagnose possible depression," the expert advised.

At the same time, when starting an important business, you need to be aware of your capabilities, both moral and physical. A person must understand whether they can complete this task, how they can support themselves, and what skills they possess.

"Divide the task into stages or gain additional knowledge to cope with it. Don't wait for the perfect moment — it just doesn't exist. As well as a perfect job. Perfectionism is not your friend; rather, it can become a source of insecurity," the therapist recommended.

Earlier, on April 24, Galina Smirnova, an endocrinologist at the Scandinavian Health Center, told Izvestia that those who experience drowsiness and mood deterioration in the spring will benefit from gentle physical activity, light nutrition with sufficient vitamins, and adherence to sleep patterns. According to her, urban residents are particularly susceptible to spring asthenia.
