A well-preserved mummy of a 5,000-year-old woman has been discovered in Peru.

Scientists have discovered an ancient burial site of a young woman of high social standing in the Lima region of Peru. This was announced on April 24 on the website of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic.

"This is an exceptional burial, as the skin, hair and nails have been preserved, which is rare in this area, where only skeletal remains are usually found," the ministry stressed.

It is specified that the discovered remains belong to a woman aged from 20 to 35 years. They were found at the Aspero archaeological site in the ancient fishing town of the Karal civilization. It is the oldest known civilization of America, which existed approximately in the period from 3000 to 1800 BC.

The Peruvian Ministry of Culture reported that the woman's body was wrapped in several layers of cloth, covered with a blanket with parrot feathers, and on her head was a headdress with bundles of twisted threads.

"The characteristics of the offerings and the funeral rite indicate that the woman held a high social position, which confirms evidence of the leading role of women in this ancient Andean society," the scientists said.

The grave also contained items that were placed there at the funeral along with the body. Among them were wicker baskets decorated with needles, an Amazonian snail shell, a toucan beak inlaid with beads, cloth, sweet potato tubers and other things.
