The European Union (EU) countries and Kiev, having listened to Washington's ideas on resolving the conflict in Ukraine, for their part proposed joint monitoring of the observance of the ceasefire under the leadership of the United States and the support of third countries. This was reported on April 25 by the Reuters news agency, referring to a document at its disposal.

"Commit to a complete and unconditional cease-fire in the sky, on land and at sea...> Monitoring [of compliance with] the ceasefire under the leadership of the United States and with the support of third countries," the text of the document says.

It is noted that Ukrainian and European officials opposed some of the US proposals to end the conflict, putting forward counter proposals on issues of territories and sanctions.

"Territorial issues will be discussed and resolved after a complete and unconditional ceasefire. Negotiations on the issue of territories will begin with the definition of the line of control," the document says.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump said that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky had an understanding that Crimea would remain part of Russia. Also, according to the American leader, Ukraine is unlikely to ever join NATO and, in general, "Ukraine's desire to join the alliance led to the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine."

Prior to that, on April 23, Trump said that the United States was experiencing more difficulties in negotiations with Ukraine than with Russia, with which agreements had been practically reached. In addition, according to him, Zelensky's statement about the refusal to recognize Crimea as the territory of the Russian Federation hinders the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
