A draft law on mandatory registration of pets is being developed in the Trans-Baikal Territory. This should reduce the number of stray dogs and cats.

The project is being developed by the regional Committee on Agrarian Policy. According to the head of the committee, Mikhail Yakimov, quoted by ChitaMedia news agency, the purpose of the innovation is to organize accounting, search for lost animals, and also prevent an increase in the number of animals without owners.

It is planned to organize labeling and accounting, assigning a number to a pet, and registering it in the federal state information system. The regional State Service of the region will handle the procedure. Those owners who do not register pets will face administrative liability.

Similar laws have already been introduced in 20 Russian regions. So, in the Moscow region, since March, owners of unregistered dogs have been fined. Amendments to the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation have entered into force, which establish the administrative responsibility of pet owners for non-compliance with the mandatory registration of their pets. This measure provides for the creation of a single database about pets, which will simplify their search in case of loss.

Since January 1, the mandatory registration of dogs began to operate in the Leningrad region. Cats can be registered at the request of the owner, said Leonid Krotov, head of the veterinary department of the region.
