The German historian noted the importance of the meeting on the Elbe in 1945

The meeting of Soviet and Allied forces on April 21 and 22, 1945 in the city of Torgau on the Elbe River was of key importance, as it showed that the defeat of Nazi Germany was very close. German publicist and historian Frank Schumann told Izvestia about this on April 25.
"This event was extremely important: on April 21 and 22, Soviet and American troops met, and thus the achievement of a military goal, namely, the defeat of the Nazi dictatorship and the end of the war, was in close proximity," said Schuman.
The historian also added that the current warming of relations between Russia and the United States may not lead to "combat brotherhood," but at least to greater mutual understanding and a spirit of cooperation.
According to Schuman, it is very important that the city once again remembers the importance of this meeting by installing stands and hanging posters, and this shows that "ordinary people have a completely different attitude towards Russians than the official authorities."
On April 13, WWII veteran Anatoly Parubin told Izvestia about the capture of Vienna by the Red Army in 1945. According to him, the Germans blew up almost all the bridges across the Danube in the city, but the Soviet soldiers managed to clear the last remaining crossing.
