The authorities of the Gagauz Autonomous Region are not going to obey the decision of the Moldovan government to celebrate May 9 as Europe Day. This was announced on April 25 by Ilya Uzun, Deputy Head of the Executive Committee of Gagauzia.
He noted that for the residents of the autonomous region, May 9 is primarily the Day of the Great Victory.
"Back in January, at the initiative of our Bashkan Evgenia Alexandrovna Gutsul, the Executive Committee of Gagauzia declared 2025 the Year of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War <...> We, Gagauzians, respect your (Government of Moldova. — Ed.) opinion. But we don't need to be told how to honor our heroes," the local Telegram channel quoted him as saying. GRT.MD .
In addition, Uzun added that May 9 is a great holiday for many nations, so young generations should know and remember the brave war heroes.
Earlier, on April 23, it was reported that the Moldovan authorities banned the holding of Victory Day events in the main square of Chisinau and decided that only Europe Day would be celebrated in the republic on May 9. For these purposes, the area of the Grand National Assembly is planned to be occupied by the organization of the so-called European town.
