The Chinese authorities are considering the possibility of exempting part of US imports from 125% duties. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on April 25, citing sources.

"A task force of the Ministry of Commerce is compiling lists of goods that may be exempt from duties and asking companies to submit their own applications," the material says.

According to the authors of the article, Beijing's actions indicate that it is seriously concerned about the economic consequences of the trade war with Washington. At the same time, China is also preparing to include eight items of goods related to the production of semiconductors in the list.

"Many imported goods, from ethane to pharmaceuticals, do not have simple alternatives or their production outside the United States can take years," the article says.

In addition, the largest ethane processors have already appealed to the Chinese authorities to cancel duties, since the United States is their only supplier.

On April 23, White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said that the American side does not intend to unilaterally reduce tariffs on China. However, Washington is optimistic about a possible agreement with Beijing. According to Leavitt, the United States requires China, first of all, to reduce its own tariffs on products from the country, as well as to lift non-monetary trade restrictions.

Earlier, on April 9, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States would immediately raise trade duties on China to 125%. On the same day, the Chinese authorities, in turn, decided to raise duties on imported goods from the United States to 84% as a mirror measure.
