Scientists from the Sirius University of Science and Technology have patented an innovative drug for obesity. This was reported to Izvestia by the press service of the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent).

Scientists propose to solve the global problem of our time - obesity - with the help of genetic bioengineering tools. One of the effective ways is considered to be the transformation of white fat cells into a more capable of splitting (catabolically active) version by reprogramming them.

"The proposed invention provides a nucleic acid variant encoding the PRDM16 gene packaged in an expression AAV vector," the Rospatent materials provided to Izvestia stated.

According to studies conducted on laboratory mice, the introduction of adeno-associated viral vector stimulates the transformation of white adipose tissue into brown and leads to further reduction in mammalian weight. The expression vector is delivered to the adipose tissue by injection. The innovation can be used for the prevention and treatment of metabolic disorders, particularly obesity.
