The Indian authorities decided to suspend the 1960 Indus River Treaty, thereby stopping the supply of water from the stream to Pakistan. This was reported on April 24 by the ANI News agency, citing a statement from the Indian Foreign Ministry.

"The Indus River Waters Treaty of 1960 is suspended with immediate effect until Pakistan reliably and irreversibly renounces its support for cross—border terrorism," the agency quoted the Indian agency as saying.

Thus, India has completely blocked four hydraulic structures through which water previously entered the neighboring country through a system of dams and canals. The relevant decision comes into force immediately, the publication says.

According to the Al Jazeera TV channel, Pakistan previously called a possible violation of the water supply an "act of war." Then the country's authorities declared that they were ready to respond "with all their might, using the full range of national power."

For both countries, the Indus basin is a vital source of water for agriculture. The 1960 agreement regulated the distribution of six rivers between the two countries.

In India, on April 22, a group of terrorists attacked civilians and tourists in the Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam in southern Kashmir. As a result, 27 people were killed, including foreigners, women and the elderly.

In this regard, on April 24, the Government of India announced the suspension of the issuance of visas for Pakistani citizens, they must leave the country by April 27. On the same day, the Pakistani Security Council declared Indian defense, naval and aviation advisers persona non grata.
