Virologist assessed the risk of cholera spreading in Russia

There is practically no risk of cholera spreading in Russia, as its causative agent is very unstable in the external environment. This opinion was expressed by biologist and virologist, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Peter Chumakov on Thursday, April 24.
Earlier that day, Rospotrebnadzor reported that an imported case of cholera had been detected in the Moscow Region, the Moscow City News agency reports. The disease was discovered in a man who returned from India, IA Regnum reports.
Chumakov called the case of cholera detection an emergency because it is a particularly dangerous infection. At the same time, the scientist noted that this is not uncommon in India.
"It also spreads with water, that is, if, let's say, feces enter the wastewater and then go to some reservoirs. Then, if people bathe and swallow this water, infection is possible. Moreover, this patient was immediately identified and localized. There is no reason to worry," Chumakov shared in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
In turn, infectious disease specialist Azizbek Botirov warned about the danger of dehydration in patients with cholera. 360.ru .
Earlier, on April 17, Rospotrebnadzor denied information about cholera in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The ministry noted that messages of a similar nature began to appear back in 2022. However, the epidemiological situation of cholera was stable and was under constant control of the sanitary authorities, and preventive measures were also carried out.
