The United States Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) may disband the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agency, which helps the economic development of poor but stable countries. This was reported by The New York Times on April 23, citing sources.

"Employees of the Millennium Challenge Corporation agency have been informed by email that they will be asked to retire early or resign after visits last week by the government team [of the head of DOGE] Elon Musk's cost—cutting strategy," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, the MCC is planned to be reduced to the minimum required by law. It is clarified that the White House did not comment on the situation.

The NYT reports that the MCC was created in 2004 on the initiative of former US President George W. Bush to provide assistance to poor countries, while demanding responsibility from them for the responsible use of US funds. The agency's annual budget is about $1 billion.

On April 23, Bloomberg announced that DOGE was reducing funding for research grants from the National Science Foundation by $135 million. According to the newspaper, the cuts will affect dozens of existing grants, including several programs aimed at combating disinformation and deepfake.

Earlier, on April 20, the Financial Times newspaper reported that DOGE had begun work to reduce government spending in the US art sector. It is specified that representatives of the department visited the National Art Gallery of the USA on April 17, the leading cultural institution in Washington, which preserves the world's art collections.
