The dentist talked about the contraindications to the installation of braces

People who experience problems related to uneven teeth can use braces to correct the situation. However, not everyone can install them. A dental surgeon, chief physician of the Russian Dental Implantation Center dental Clinic network, Sabit Aliyev, told Izvestia what the contraindications are.

Temporary restrictions for the installation of braces can be called reasons that can be cured or that may disappear over time. So, this idea should be abandoned by people who suffer from tooth decay, periodontitis. You must first undergo full treatment.

"Gum disease also makes it difficult to get braces. Weak, inflamed dentine leads to tooth mobility, and the pressure of braces will further aggravate the situation. However, sometimes gum problems, on the contrary, can be solved with braces, as sometimes inflammation can develop due to crowding of teeth. Therefore, if periodontitis or even periodontal disease develops, then first of all it is necessary to be cured. With proper treatment, it is possible to stabilize the situation with inflammation in two weeks, and in severe cases — about six months," explained Aliyev.

The expert also noted that most of these systems are made of metal. They attract an inexpensive price, but in rare cases they can cause allergies, since about 10% of women and 2% of men have an acute allergy to nickel. In such situations, alternatives are used in the form of aligners or sapphire, ceramic and titanium braces.

"Many women develop gingivitis or other oral inflammations during pregnancy. Therefore, I definitely recommend delaying braces until the end of breastfeeding. In the case when pregnancy occurs after the installation of a braces system, the patient simply has to carefully monitor the condition of the teeth and constantly visit an orthodontist," Aliyev added.

He also spoke about the temporomandibular joint system, which is responsible for the movable part of the jaw. With its anomalies, the patient develops facial asymmetry, constant yawning or creaking in the jaw. In this case, the orthodontist first refers the patient to a gnathologist, who treats with occlusive therapy — that is, special silicone splints are applied to the lower and sometimes upper jaws, which gradually fix the correct shape of the jaw. Such treatment takes from three to six months, depending on the severity of the dysfunction, and the installation of braces becomes the second stage of treatment.

"Teeth grinding in a dream (bruxism) negatively affects the wearing of braces. A person puts so much pressure on their teeth, destroys the enamel, involuntarily and often clenching their jaws, and the braces system will aggravate the situation, creating even more pressure on the dentition," the dentist added.

In addition, braces are contraindicated for patients of cancer dispensaries, tubal dispensaries, people suffering from pathologies of the endocrine or immune system, as well as with affected bone tissue, since the same osteoporosis reduces tissue density and increases the risk of tooth loss.

"The body of patients with serious illnesses is simply unable to withstand the strain of braces. The teeth will fall out by themselves or be affected by caries," the surgeon specified.

At the same time, patients with a disorder of the nervous system or psyche will not be able to properly monitor the condition of their teeth during wearing, which leads to risks. In these cases, such systems are also not installed.

Earlier, on February 25, Elena Martynova, a dentist, periodontist at the SM-Dentistry clinic, Candidate of Medical Sciences, told Izvestia that chronic foci of infection caused by untreated caries weaken the local immunity of the oral cavity, facilitating the penetration of viruses and bacteria into the body. According to her, advanced caries is a direct path to tooth loss.
