- Kovalchuk pointed out the need to introduce new technologies into the civilian sphere.

The experience of manufacturing and using advanced domestic technologies must be transferred from the defense sector to the civilian one. This was announced on April 24 by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center.
During his visit to Petrozavodsk State University (PetrSU), Kovalchuk was shown the Baguette 2.0 programmable logic controller, which is fully manufactured in Russia. It is used to automate production processes in various fields. The complex was developed at the Scientific Research Institute of System Research (NIISI) The Kurchatov Institute, and at PetrSU, automated control systems are being created on its basis.
"All this development was done mainly for use in defense technologies. The entire family of trusted processors, controllers, and computing systems based on them. Today, the key issue for us <...> is the introduction of all these technologies that are successfully used on the battlefield into the civilian [sphere], because we need to switch to trusted tools in critical infrastructure," he said.
Kovalchuk stressed that the use of foreign technologies makes some areas vulnerable. According to him, it is necessary to create a fully independent nuclear and ship complex in Russia, as well as the housing and communal services sector.
Earlier that day, Kovalchuk announced that the Kurchatov Institute would certify materials for icebreakers on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to him, specialists have currently developed cold-resistant steels that can withstand temperatures up to -60 degrees, as well as high-strength Arctic-grade steels with increased resistance to corrosion and brittle fracture.
