- The expert predicted negative consequences for the EU due to the continued sanctions against Russia.

The economic losses of the European Union (EU) due to the sanctions standoff with Russia already amount to trillions of dollars, and the situation continues to deteriorate. Maxim Chirkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements at GUU, told Izvestia on April 24.
"The problems in the EU economy are absolutely obvious. The figures that were cited at the beginning of the year — damage of $1.3 trillion — are greatly underestimated. Today, the losses are much greater, taking into account the indirect effects, including the decline in GDP," he said.
According to the expert, the European authorities will eventually be forced to reconsider their position.
"I think common sense among European officials and lawmakers will prevail. They will come to the conclusion that it is necessary to reduce tensions around the Ukrainian conflict and unconditionally lift sanctions," the expert added.
At the moment, the sanctions pressure continues to increase, however, according to the expert, this may be part of a negotiating tactic before the inevitable changes in global economic policy.
He also drew attention to similar processes in the United States.
"There is already some awareness of the problem, and it is not related to the change of the president. Western economies are suffering huge losses due to sanctions. So far, the confrontation remains, but the negotiation processes — not only with Russia, but also with the countries of the global South — are already close," Chirkov summed up.
Earlier, on March 17, Igor Yushkov, an expert and lecturer at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, in an interview with Izvestia, predicted an increase in gas prices in Europe in the event of abandonment of Russian LNG. According to him, in order to replace Russian gas, Europe will have to reorient supplies from Qatar, which is currently sending its fuel to Asia.
