The Kurchatov Institute National Research Center (NIC) will certify materials for icebreakers on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was stated on April 24 by the president of the center, Mikhail Kovalchuk, during a speech at the conference "Environmental Problems of the Arctic territories."

According to him, specialists have currently developed cold-resistant steels that can withstand temperatures up to -60 degrees, as well as high-strength Arctic-grade steels with increased resistance to corrosion and brittle fracture.

On February 21, Kovalchuk pointed out Russia's advantage in the field of nuclear icebreaking fleet. He recalled that the Russian Federation is constantly working in the Arctic region. In addition, the Russian state has the largest population in this area — almost 2 million people.
