Negotiations on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine are reaching an impasse due to the positions of Brussels and Kiev. Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the RAS Center for Security Studies and an American political scientist, shared this opinion with Izvestia on April 24.

"Today, Ukraine is no longer focused on the United States, it is focused on Russophobic Europe. All this is a peaceful settlement because of the position of the EU and [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky is actually reaching an impasse, and the United States sees fewer and fewer opportunities for this settlement. The only way is to simply get out of this conflict without making any profit there, either in dollars, or in resources, or, consequently, in political prestige," he said.

At the same time, Blokhin also noted that if Washington wanted to, it would have put pressure on Kiev a long time ago. According to him, "The rubicon was crossed" after a public quarrel between US President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian leader in the Oval Office of the White House.

"The United States could put pressure, but will Trump do it? I don't think so. The United States cannot put pressure on Ukraine, even by signing a deal that is profitable for itself, because now there is nothing to pay for in Ukraine, plus it is impossible to extract rare earths in conflict conditions, therefore, in fact, the United States' ability to put pressure on Ukraine is limited," he said.

On April 23, White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said that the President of Ukraine was moving in the wrong direction on the issue of negotiations. At the same time, she stressed that Trump's patience was "running out."

On the same day, Trump said that Zelensky's words about refusing to recognize Crimea as Russian territory prevented a peaceful settlement of the conflict. He also noted that it is more difficult for the United States to negotiate with Ukraine than with Russia, with which agreements have been practically reached.

On April 22, The New York Times reported that due to Zelensky's words about Crimea, the head of the US State Department, Marco Rubio, canceled his visit to London, where a meeting with representatives of the EU and Ukraine on conflict resolution was to take place that day. On the same day, he, as well as Vice President J. D. Vance, allowed Washington to withdraw from the process of resolving the Ukrainian crisis.
