On behalf of President Alexander Lukashenko, the Government of Belarus has submitted to parliament a bill "On amnesty in connection with the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War" (WWII). This was announced on April 24 by the press service of the head of state on the website.

"On behalf of the President of Belarus, the government has submitted to parliament a bill on amnesty in connection with the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War," the statement said.

It is noted that the project retains the approaches of amnesties of previous years and provides for innovations. Persons who will be released from criminal punishment will also be those who have certain diseases. In addition, it is proposed that people of 70 years of age and those sentenced to imprisonment for up to six years inclusive, replace the punishment with a more lenient one.

At the same time, in order to receive amnesty, convicts must fully compensate for the damage caused during the crimes and have a positive characterization during the period of serving their sentence. According to preliminary calculations, at the moment about 8 thousand convicts will be granted amnesty.

In July last year, Lukashenko signed the law "On amnesty in connection with the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders." Minors, pregnant women, women and men with children under the age of 18 were subject to amnesty, with the exception of those who committed an intentional crime against a minor. Also, pensioners, people with disabilities of groups I and II, people with open tuberculosis and cancer, citizens affected by the Chernobyl disaster, people who were injured or sick while performing duties during military service.
