The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of raising taxes on the incomes of Americans who earn over $1 million per year. The Washington Post wrote about this on April 23, citing unnamed administration officials and other sources.

The publication notes that this initiative is supported by Vice President J. D. Vance and Director of the Office of Administrative and Budgetary Policy Russell Vout. Influential Republicans, Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Mike Johnson, as well as Senators Dave McCormick and Ted Cruz, opposed the idea of raising taxes.

"Republicans want to extend the 2017 tax law, which could add more than $4 trillion in new tax breaks as the national debt grows. The party has explored the possibility of significant cost cuts, including Medicaid, a health insurance program for the poor, but is aware of the political disadvantages of such a decision. These obstacles have prompted some of Trump's allies to consider raising taxes on the super—rich," the newspaper writes.

At the same time, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested supporting the idea of raising taxes for Americans who earn more than $5 million a year, two sources said at once.

On April 18, NBC News reported that wealthy residents of the United States increasingly began to open accounts in Swiss banks due to Trump's economic policy as part of the "de-Americanization" of their portfolios. Thus, the wealthy citizens of the United States are trying to diversify some of their dollar assets and create a "spare airfield" in Europe. On April 15, Trump also said that the profits from the new US duties could be so large that they would completely replace the income tax.

In January, Bessent, while still a candidate for the post of head of the US Treasury, noted that the United States could face a financial crisis and the largest tax increase in history by $4 trillion, which requires urgent measures from Congress. He called the current expenditures of 24-25% of GDP unprecedented in peacetime.
