- The Bundestag deputy called the role of the USSR in the end of the Second World War a key one.

The Russian people, the Soviet Army, and the entire Soviet Union (USSR) played a major role in ending World War II. This was stated by Bundestag deputy from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party Steffen Cotre in an interview with Izvestia on April 23.
According to him, the fact that Germany wants to expel the Russian ambassador from commemorative ceremonies celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Victory is a real scandal.
"The Russians, the Soviet Army, played a decisive role in ending World War II, it should be noted, it should be borne in mind that Soviet soldiers and the Soviet Union played the biggest role in this," Cotre said.
The German politician is also convinced that modern German ideological politics uses history as a propaganda tool, and politicians are trying to "ideologically attack the Russians" again.
"The fact that we were liberated from the Nazis, and the fact that this is not being celebrated, is, of course, a scandal. That's what's really ideological. This is a scandal. And this once again shows how wrong German policy is," Cotre concluded.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Brandenburg authorities might not allow the Russian Ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechaev, to attend an event in honor of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, dedicated to the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Later, Nechaev replied that he did not need a special invitation to honor the memory of Soviet liberators and victims of Nazism in public places and solemnly celebrate Victory Day.
In March, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for a tough fight against the rewriting of history by the European Union (EU) countries. He stressed that in some EU states, the criminals convicted by the Nuremberg Tribunal are being equalized with those who liberated Europe from fascism.
