Cooperation between Russia and the United States in the Arctic may resume after the lifting of anti-Russian sanctions. Irina Strelnikova, a political scientist and associate professor of the Department of Foreign Regional Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, told about this on Wednesday, April 23.

"I think that Russia and the United States will be able to return to this issue [of cooperation in the Arctic] when sanctions are lifted," the expert said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

According to Strelnikova, the United States is already discussing the lifting of some sanctions, primarily in the energy sector, which most hinder cooperation with Russia. In general, the administration of US President Donald Trump understands that it is very short-sighted to exclude Russia, rich in resources and with extensive polar possessions, from Arctic activities.

Political scientist Irina Strelnikova also spoke about cooperation between Russia and European countries in the Arctic. According to her, almost all joint initiatives in the region are currently missing.

Earlier, Alexey Chekunkov, Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, told Izvestia that the Arctic would become one of the priority topics within the framework of a constructive dialogue between Russia and the United States.

He clarified that cooperation between the two countries has now been minimized, so the issue of providing the world with affordable energy, food and the production of high-tech goods can become the basis for cooperation. According to him, logistics can also be a reason for cooperation. Chekunkov noted that the Northern Sea Route has already established itself as a transport artery of global importance. In addition, he added that the indigenous and small-numbered peoples of the North are also a possible field for dialogue.

On April 21, the publication Responsible Statecraft (RS) reported that the United States could offer Russia the lifting of sanctions on projects in the Arctic or guarantee Western investments if Russia cooperates on Ukraine. 360.ru .

On April 4, Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and Special presidential envoy for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, said that during talks with representatives of the Trump administration, including special envoy of the US President Steve Witkoff, issues of cooperation in the Arctic were discussed, NSN reports.

Prior to that, on March 27, Dmitriev announced that an investment fund for the development of the Arctic would be created by the end of this year. He also stressed the interest of US companies in investing in the Arctic, including in a number of Russian technologies, including projects in the field of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
