- Wagenknecht urged not to forget about the role of the USSR in the war against Nazi Germany

German politicians should not forget about the decisive contribution of the Soviet Union (USSR) to the victory over Nazi Germany. This was stated on April 23 by Sarah Wagenknecht's Union for Reason and Justice party leader Sarah Wagenknecht against the background of recommendations from the German Foreign Ministry not to invite Russian and Belarusian diplomats to commemorative events.
"Anyone who no longer knows or wants to know that the Red Army bore the brunt of the war against Nazi Germany and that 27 million people from the former Soviet Union, most of whom were Russians, were victims of the extermination campaign of the German Wehrmacht has no place in German politics," Wagenknecht told the DPA news agency.
Wagenknecht also said that such actions "damage Germany's international prestige" and can be perceived as "mental preparation for a new war with Russia." She also recalled the role of the USSR leadership in the process of unification of Germany.
Earlier in the day, Sergei Naryshkin, director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), said that the ban imposed by EU officials on visiting Moscow during the celebration of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War (WWII) on May 9 was disgusting.
On April 14, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaya Kallas, warned European officials that if they visited Russia to participate in Victory Day celebrations, they would face "consequences."
