On the first Sunday after Easter comes another memorial day, popularly known as Krasnaya Gorka. On this day, people go to the cemetery, clean up the graves and leave treats for deceased relatives. In 2025, the date falls on April 27. Izvestia has prepared heartfelt memorial cards and congratulations on Krasnaya Gorka, which can be sent to friends and family.

Good morning, postcards with Krasnaya Gorka and Antipaskha

According to the established tradition, Krasnaya Gorka is celebrated on the next Sunday after the Resurrection of Christ. On Easter itself, one is not supposed to go to the cemetery and perform memorial services. There is no official ban on visiting the cemetery on Easter days, but the clergy do not approve of this, since on this day believers celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, personifying the triumph of life over death.

Many people visit the cemetery and clean up the graves of the deceased after Easter, sharing the joy of Christ's resurrection with their deceased ancestors. In the church calendar, the date is listed as St. Thomas Sunday, or Antipascha. The prefix "anti" in the name of the celebration means "like" or in the likeness of Easter, that is, in its own way, Antipascha is a holiday that once again recalls an important biblical event that gives hope for eternal life.

The name "St. Thomas Sunday" comes from the name of the Apostle Thomas. According to legend, after the resurrection, Christ appeared to his disciples, but did not find Thomas among them. The apostle did not believe in the miraculous event and continued to consider Christ dead. Then, a week later, Jesus appeared to him, saying: "Give me your hand, Thomas, and put it in my wounds. And don't be an unbeliever." Hence, the expression "Thomas the unbeliever" appeared, which became famous.

Touching postcards on memorial day in April 2025

In the folk tradition, Antipaskha, or Fomino Sunday, is better known as Krasnaya Gorka. It is believed that this name appeared in pre-Christian Russia. In the old days, the word "red" meant beautiful. Hills and hills that were used for religious purposes were called slides. In earlier times, pagan idols were installed on them, and later Orthodox churches.

Initially, Krasnaya Gorka was a spring festival. Traditionally, the celebration was accompanied by various rituals and noisy festivities. With the Baptism of Rus, pagan and Christian traditions became closely intertwined, and the holiday acquired a different meaning.

As a result, Krasnaya Gorka began to be considered another day of commemoration of the dead, although according to Christian tradition, visits and cleaning of graves are usually performed on the ninth day after Easter — on Radonitsa. It is on this day (in 2025, Tuesday, April 29) that the first church—wide commemoration of the dead after the Resurrection of Christ takes place.

As on parental Saturdays, believers attend church in the morning to pray for the souls of the deceased, and then go to cemeteries. Christians put their graves in order after the autumn leaf fall and winter snow, decorate them with flowers and light candles, and bring cakes and eggs consecrated in the church.

After that, the whole family gathers for a memorial dinner. At the table, the audience speaks kind words about the deceased relatives, remembering their good deeds and deeds.

Another tradition of the holiday is to send postcards with a Red Slide to friends and family, wishing peace and the Kingdom of Heaven to deceased relatives. The pictures often depict flowers, burning candles and lamps. There are images of crosses with memorial inscriptions, Easter cakes, as well as other religious attributes and symbols.

You can download postcards for free on the Internet. Some people prefer to create them themselves using special applications and neural networks. But no matter what the card is, it should remind you of the essence of the celebration — preserving the bright memory of the dead.

Congratulations on Krasnaya Gorka and Memorial Day in prose

Postcards can be supplemented with short wishes. Here are some examples of how to congratulate Krasnaya Gorka in prose in your own words:

"Congratulations on Krasnaya Gorka, a special day of the year when we remember everyone who has remained in our memory forever. As long as we remember those who were taken away by heaven, they live in our hearts and protect us from all adversity with invisible angels. Let's remember our relatives and friends who passed away. May they rest in peace, and may their immortal souls find peace in the Kingdom of Heaven!"

"Today, many prayers will be said in all churches and many candles will be lit in memory of all deceased Christians. May each candle flame give light to the soul and hope for eternal life. May all the relatives be alive and well, and the inextinguishable memory of the departed will be preserved through the generations. Happy Red Hill!"

"On this bright and sad day, which is popularly called Krasnaya Gorka, I wish you to keep the best memories of your deceased loved ones. May their memory not fade like a candle flame, and our prayers help them in their new life. May the Lord protect you and your loved ones from all troubles and sorrows!"

"On this spring Sunday, Orthodox Christians celebrate Krasnaya Gorka. The holiday reminds us of those who are dear and loved, but who are no longer with us. Let's honor the memory of the dead and pray for the living. Be healthy and happy. Happy holidays!"

"Happy Red Hill! This holiday calls us to remember that the human body is perishable, but the soul lives forever. Let's remember our relatives and friends who are not on earth. May the Lord rest their souls, and grant us all His mercy and prosperity!"
