The authorities of Brandenburg may not allow the Russian ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechaev, to attend an event in honor of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, dedicated to the defeat of Nazi Germany. This was reported by the Bild newspaper on April 22, citing Axel Drekoll, director of the Brandenburg Memorial Foundation.

"If the ambassador arrives anyway, we will enforce our internal rules — in close cooperation with the security forces," Drekoll said.

The reason for this statement with threats of expulsion, according to the publication, were Nechaev's words about attending the ceremony despite the prohibitions. Drekoll, in turn, noted that employees of the Russian embassy, starting in 2022, are prohibited from taking part in anniversaries.

On April 17, Nechaev announced that he was calm about the Bundestag's decision not to invite him to a commemorative event in Germany to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. In addition, he said that about 300 commemorative events have already been planned at the embassy and other Russian foreign institutions in Germany.

On April 16, Niels–Olaf Luders, a member of the Brandenburg Landtag and head of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (BSW) faction, said that the German Foreign Ministry's call not to invite Russian representatives to commemorative events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II was absolutely unacceptable.
