On April 22, Russian artist Nikas Safronov, in an interview with Izvestia, shared details of his work on a portrait of US President Donald Trump, which was handed over to the American leader by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The painting was inspired by an attempted assassination attempt on a politician during the election campaign.

According to Safronov, the idea of the painting was suggested to him by the cover of Time magazine, where Trump is depicted among the guards, raising his hand up "as a sign of steadfastness." The artist stressed that he was inspired by the politician's determination to continue fighting despite the threat to his life, as well as his position in support of media freedom and the desire for peace.

"A man who wants to make America great. A man who wants world peace and is trying to reconcile countries," Safronov said.

The artist said that he depicted Trump against the background of a half-lowered US flag and the Statue of Liberty. After learning that the president was from New York, he added the embankment and the city landscape to the painting.

The author paid special attention to the details, including the trace of blood on the politician's cheek, symbolizing the moment of the assassination attempt. Safronov also noted that it was important for him to express his support for Trump not only artistically, but also spiritually, by praying for the Republican's health.

The artist emphasized the symbolism of the portrait: a cap with the slogan "America will be great," a hand gesture raising the flag, and a look towards the future. According to him, this work has historical significance.

"I think that this historical moment, depicted by me, will remain as an iconic painting both in America and around the world. Such works are usually priceless," Safronov concluded.

Earlier, on March 22, Stephen Witkoff, the US president's special envoy for the Middle East, said in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson that Putin had given Trump his portrait, which was painted by a Russian artist. Later, the American envoy gave the painting to the US president himself.

On the same day, Safronov said that the portrait presented by Putin to Trump was an invaluable work of art. According to him, painters rarely comment on their work and, as a rule, do not disclose the identity of those for whom the paintings were created.
