The purchase of Russian gas from the European Union (EU) is another area of Ukraine's dependence. Vladimir Demidov, an independent expert on the resources and energy market, told Izvestia on April 22.

"Ukraine is already dependent on any front. Therefore, gas dependence on Brussels is a plus of another dependence. There is no such thing that it will somehow worsen the situation of Ukraine. It seems to me that there is nowhere else to go," he said.

According to the analyst, many people knew about Russian gas purchases in Ukraine, but they kept silent. He admitted that politicians in Kiev might have feared the consequences of such statements.

"If they are talking about this now, then I admit that this may indicate that disagreements within the political community in Ukraine are already coming out," Demidov said.

Ukraine will always buy gas, as the gas fields on its territory will never allow it to close its own needs, the expert concluded.

On April 22, the first deputy head of the Energy Committee of the Verkhovna Rada, Alexei Kucherenko, said that Ukraine was acquiring Russian gas supplied to Europe through the Turkish Stream gas pipeline.

At the beginning of the month, the Russian energy company Gazprom reported that the Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities (UGS) had reached an absolute minimum during the observation period. According to Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) on March 31, European reserves, in turn, decreased to 34.3 billion cubic meters, which is one third of the storage volume. This figure decreased by 25.3 billion cubic meters compared to last year.
