The head of the Astrakhan branch of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS), Peter Bukharitsin, disappeared during an expedition to the uninhabited sandy island of Ukatny in the north of the Caspian Sea. This was announced on April 22 by the Border Department of the Federal Security Service (FSB) for the Republic of Kalmykia and the Astrakhan region.

"Employees of the department are taking part in search activities organized by the Caspian Flotilla. A border guard ship and two boats are involved," said Olga Nikeshina, an official representative of the department.

At Ukatnoye, Bukharitsin led an expedition to map the northern part of the coastal zone of the Caspian Sea. It is specified that the scientist is 76 years old.

Earlier, on February 17, two sailors of a tanker that arrived at the village of Korf to unload fuel and lubricants disappeared in Kamchatka. It was reported that the crew members disappeared after they tried to swim to the ship by boat from the shore.
