Three quarters of Americans believe that US President Donald Trump should not run for a third term. This follows from a survey on the popularity of the American leader conducted by Reuters and Ipsos.

According to the survey, three-quarters of respondents said that Trump should not run for a third term, despite his statements that he does not exclude the possibility of remaining in office in the future.

In addition, the poll showed that the American leader's approval rating dropped to a record low of 42% after his return to the White House. The corresponding figure, recorded in the first hours after Trump's inauguration in January, was at 47%, and three weeks ago it was 43%.

According to analysts, the decline in public trust may be due, among other things, to his attitude towards universities, in particular, the recent freezing of grants for Harvard University. In addition, 59% of respondents, including Republicans, are confident that the United States is losing weight on the world stage.

The survey was conducted for six days, and its results were released on Monday, April 21. Just over 4.3 thousand adult US citizens took part in it, and the margin of error was about two percentage points.

Trump said in an interview with NBC News on March 30 that he did not rule out the possibility of running for a third time. The journalists asked about the scenario in which the Vice President of the United States, J. D. Vance, would run for this position, and then transfer this role to Trump. The American leader replied that this was one of the methods.

Political scientist Ivan Mezyuho, in turn, told Izvestia that this method could be effective. According to him, by this time the country may face a new domestic political reality. The expert also noted that there are other situations in which the President of the United States can hold his seat for more than two terms.
