NYT talked about the plans of the US authorities to achieve the separation of Google

The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking to separate the American corporation Google, which is valued at $ 1.81 trillion, in order to eliminate its monopoly in the field of Internet search. This was reported by The New York Times (NYT) on Monday, April 21.
One of the key demands of the authorities was the forced sale of the Chrome web browser, as it plays a key role in attracting users to the Google search engine. The hearing in the case will last three weeks, the publication says.
It is clarified that the first lawsuit against Google was filed back in 2020. Later, in 2023, it was proven that the company had entered into multibillion-dollar deals with device and browser manufacturers to install its default search engine. In particular, in 2021 alone, Google spent $26.3 billion on such agreements with Apple and Samsung.
Google does not agree with the accusations and claims that users choose their search engine voluntarily because of its quality. The company also emphasized that it is constantly investing in improving its product.
The court's decision is expected by the end of the summer. It may affect not only the future of Google, but also the alignment of forces in the race for leadership in the field of artificial intelligence, where the company competes with Microsoft, OpenAI and Meta (its activities are recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).
The Reuters news agency reported back in November last year that the US Department of Justice had sued Alphabet, which owns Google, to sell the Chrome browser to fight its monopoly in online search. At that time, it was proposed to ban Google from re-entering the browser market for five years, buying competitors and entering into contracts to install the default search engine on mobile devices.
CNBC reported on April 16 that in the UK, a lawsuit was filed against Google for £5 billion ($6.6 billion) for abuse of "complete dominance" in search. It was clarified that the claim was sent to the British Competition Appeals Tribunal on behalf of hundreds of thousands of organizations that used Google search advertising services from January 1, 2011 until the filing of the document.
