On April 21, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his condolences over the death of Pope Francis.

"I want to express my deepest condolences to Catholics and all those around the world who are inspired by the extraordinary life and example of His Holiness, Pope Francis," Guterres said.

He called the pontiff a messenger of humility, hope and humanity who advocated peace and social justice. According to him, the pope has worked with any faiths, regardless of their beliefs. Guterres added that Francis has long inspired UN staff with his commitment to the goals of the organization.

"Pope Francis also understood that protecting our common home is, in fact, a deeply moral mission, a responsibility that lies with every human being," the UN Secretary General said.

In his opinion, the world community needs to adhere to the ideas of the Pope and follow his example in order to make the lives of all people better.

The Izvestia footage shows that the flag was lowered at the Russian Embassy in the Vatican after the death of the pontiff. The Russian Embassy in Buenos Aires also lowered the Russian flag on its building as part of Argentina's national mourning declared by President Javier Miley.

In turn, Chilean President Gabriel Boric said that the country has declared three days of mourning throughout the country due to the death of Francis. In addition, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also expressed his condolences. He noted that the Pontiff was an outstanding spiritual leader who made tireless efforts to promote the noble ideals of humanism, justice and compassion.

Pope Francis died on the morning of April 21 at the age of 89. Professor Andrea Archangeli, director of the Vatican's Office of Health and Hygiene, said the death was caused by a cerebral stroke. On the occasion of his death, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram of condolences to His Eminence Kevin Joseph Farrell, Camerlengo of the Roman Catholic Church.
