Olympic rowing champion Maria Shubina has died.

Olympic rowing champion, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR Maria Shubina died at the age of 95. This was announced by the Russian Canoe Federation on April 21.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you that Maria Timofeevna Shubina (Klyukova), a legend of Soviet sports, Olympic champion, multiple world and European champion in kayaking, doctor and devoted mentor, died on April 20 at the age of 95," the organization's Telegram channel says.

The FCR called the athlete a person of amazing modesty and strength, and also noted her successes as a doctor, mother and grandmother. The federation stressed that Shubina's life serves as a real example of how to combine family, profession and outstanding sporting achievements.

"The bright memory of Maria Timofeevna Shubina will forever remain in the history of sports and in the hearts of those who knew this amazing woman," the FKR Telegram channel says.

The athlete won a gold medal in double kayak rowing with Antonina Seredina at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. In addition to this award, during her sports career, Shubina became the world champion four times and the European champion four more times.

Later, in 1975, Shubina, who had medical education, also became a candidate of medical sciences. After completing her career in sports, she studied science and coaching in Volgograd with her husband Yuri Shubin, coach of the USSR Olympic rowing team. In 2010, the athlete received a certificate of honor from the President of the Russian Federation for her services to the development of rowing in Russia.
