The computer network game "Mir Tankov" (until 2022 — World of Tanks) will release an update on April 30 specifically for the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. The "Hangar", that is, the key place before the start of the battle, will look like the Red Square of the second half of the 40s. At the same time, the clock on the Spasskaya Tower will indicate that there are five minutes left before the start of the parade, and equipment made according to models of real cars of that time will stand on the paving stones. Izvestia learned about this and other details of the big festive gesture after talking with the Russian developer of the game Lesta Games Group.

Festive "hangar" dedicated to Victory Day

As the publishers of the "Mir Tankov" game told Izvestia, the new "hangar" is not tied to a specific date, but recreates the atmosphere of celebrating May 9 in the period 1945-1960. The main viewing point is the center of Red Square, where military equipment is frozen, ready for the ceremonial passage. "The clear blue sky, the soft sunlight, the abundance of festive decorations — all this conveys a sense of joy and special awe," the Lesta Games company believes.

"The great Victory was won thanks to the unparalleled courage and self—sacrifice of the Soviet people, who paid a huge price for it — more than 26 million human lives," recalls Boris Sinitsky, "Mir Tankov" Operations Director. — We want to honor the memory of all those heroes whose lives were sacrificed for the freedom of our Motherland. We remember those who deserved to parade through Red Square, but, alas, did not live to see this day. Our new "hangar" has become a symbol of the heroic deed of the entire people who liberated the world from the Nazi threat. We are proud to share this great story with millions of our players.

As Izvestia learned, the team worked tirelessly for almost four months to achieve an impressive result: the game's audience is more than 2.5 million players per month in Russia and Belarus, which is a very demanding audience. In addition, any flaws in the reconstruction of such a symbolically significant chronotope will cause great image losses, the company understands, where professional historians and archivists have actually been working on the tank battles for years, and the Minsk and St. Petersburg offices of Lesta are littered with old photographs, albums, drafts, and even authentic films with chronicles.

Therefore, working on the details has become one of the most difficult tasks. The company's staff historians had to reliably recreate the atmosphere of the Victory Day Parade of the 1940s and post-war Moscow, based on archival documents, photo and video materials, as well as reliable historical research.

Experts have studied recordings from the Russian State Archive of Film and Photographic Documents and the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. The rich exposition of the Museum of National Military History in Padikovo with authentic samples of the Red Army military uniforms helped. Because there are not only equipment in the hangar, but also people, military personnel, dressed in exactly the same uniform as the participants in those parades. The historians then passed this information on to the artists so that they could display the smallest details with maximum accuracy.

In total, four groups of military personnel can be seen in the "hangar": infantrymen, tankers, pilots and sailors. Every element of their clothing — from the cut of their gymnasts to the location of the orders on their uniforms — corresponds to the historical period.

However, the artists reliably depicted not only the military, but also ordinary citizens celebrating the Victory. They can be seen in the stands of the Angara stadium. In order to recreate their image, historians have studied Soviet periodicals and photographic materials on the history of civilian clothes.

Izvestia's sources in the gaming industry say that in order to recreate Red Square in the game Leste, it was probably necessary to coordinate the structure of the location and its content with the Federal Security Service and other government agencies. This process could take even longer than the actual creation of the location, and require large resource investments. The company itself does not confirm this, but it does not deny it either. Izvestia's sources say that no one would have been allowed to simply create a copy of Red Square in the game. Moreover, they do not understand how Lesta managed to implement this project in the first place.

What does the "hangar" look like by May 9th

The first thing the player sees is a tank against the background of the Pokrovsky Cathedral and the Spasskaya Tower. This viewing angle was not chosen by chance, the artists of "Lesta" say. It is this perspective with recognizable architectural symbols of Russia that immediately creates a sense of the scale of the event and its historical significance.

Each combat vehicle corresponds to real prototypes of the Great Patriotic War. The equipment is not static, but is presented as a live stage of preparation for the parade — the tanks are lined up in a row, as if waiting for the start of the solemn passage. Among the models presented are T-34-85, IS-2, ISU-152, T-34, KV-1.

Some of them are located on pedestals. According to the authors of the game, these machines are not just exhibits, but real veterans who have gone through the fire of battles. They symbolize the power and valor of the Red Army.

On the screens located on Red Square, as well as on the building of the Historical Museum, players will see the 85-meter sculpture "Motherland Calls!" from Volgograd, one of the most recognizable symbols of the Great Patriotic War.

To enhance the immersive effect, the artists added interactive elements: pigeons fly in the background, a symbol of peacetime, and airplanes fly from the Pokrovsky Cathedral towards the Historical Museum, as if entering their starting position before the parade.

The developers have also thought of a special musical accompaniment for the angara, enhancing the feeling of solemnity. The soundtrack will feature the song "Holy War" performed by the Finberg National Academic Concert Orchestra of Belarus, and on May 9, the festive anthem "Victory Day" by David Tukhmanov will be played in the game.

The new Angar continues the tradition of patriotic projects that Lesta Games conducts in the regions of Russia and Belarus. The developers of the "Mir Tankov" have already created a "hangar" on Mamayev Kurgan, reconstructed the tank parade on May 9, and also recorded the song "Holy War" with the choir of veterans and the voice of the "Immortal Regiment" Mikhail Gavrilov.

Last year, the thematically decorated port of Vladivostok appeared in the "Mir Korabley", recreated on the basis of photographs from 1945-1950. Also in 2024, the "Mir Korabley" launched a series of documentaries about the siege of Leningrad.
