The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed condolences over the death of the Pope and noted his commitment to justice and humanism. The corresponding statement was published on the agency's website on April 21.

"The deceased pontiff will be remembered as an outstanding religious and statesman, a follower of the ideals of humanism and moral principles in world politics," the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed.

The ministry added that during the pontificate of Francis, Russia and the Holy See consistently developed a constructive dialogue and made joint efforts to protect spiritual values.

The report notes that the desire for justice and peace earned the well—deserved respect of hundreds of millions of people, both Catholics and representatives of other faiths, for the late Pope.

Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram of condolences on the occasion of the Pope's death. The Pontiff played an important role in the development of contacts between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church, the head of state emphasized.

The death of Pope Francis at the age of 89 became known earlier that day. It is noted that the pontiff died at his residence in the Vatican's Santa Marta house.

The last time Francis appeared in public was on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica during Easter celebrations the day before. The pontiff has been struggling with bilateral pneumonia for a long time.
